Uptown Backpackers offers dormitories and private rooms with shared bathrooms. Dorms feature pod-style bunks with privacy curtains, USB ports, reading lights, and large under-bed lockers. Female-only dorms and family rooms are available. The rooms have wooden bunks that don't creak, and the bed linens are provided.

There is no restaurant on site, but guests can use the shared kitchen, which is equipped with two fridges, a stove, and a selection of herbs, spices, salt, pepper, and oil. The kitchen is cleaned daily and is never crowded. Free coffee and tea are available all day.

The hostel has a shared lounge area with a large sectional sofa and Netflix. Board games and puzzles are available. There is a minimarket on site for snacks. The lounge is a social space where guests can meet, but it can get crowded. There is no spa or pool.

Uptown Backpackers is 200 metres from the city centre, 600 metres from Taieri Gorge Railway, and a 2-minute walk to The Octagon. Dunedin Railway Station and Dunedin City Library are also nearby. The InterCity bus stop is a 12-minute walk, and Woolworths supermarket is a 5-minute walk. Free overnight parking is a few minutes away on the street.

The hostel offers free WiFi, daily housekeeping, luggage storage, lockers (bring your own padlock), and laundry service for NZ$10. Staff are friendly and can help with early check-in when possible. There is 24-hour security with CCTV and smoke alarms. Late check-in is straightforward with a code for the front door.
